If you have a cracked, broken, or badly decayed tooth, a dental crown can help restore your oral health. A dental crown is placed over the visible portion of your damaged tooth to reinforce and protect it.

The most aesthetically pleasing and natural looking crown is an all-porcelain crown. With porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, an opaque layer must be painted over the metal to hide its color. Because of this, it is not possible to have a completely translucent restoration that replicates the luster of your natural tooth. However, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are generally stronger because of the metal component.

The type of crown that is best for you will depend on your specific needs and situation. Ohio cosmetic dentist Dr. Raymond Sheridan prefers to use all-porcelain crowns on most patients, but will sometimes place a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown depending on your amount of damage and the location of your tooth.

You may be a good candidate for a dental crown if:

  • A significant portion of your tooth has fractured and it can not be strengthened through dental bonding.
  • Your tooth is badly decayed and there is not enough remaining tooth structure to support a dental filling
  • You need additional strengthening after a root canal
  • You are getting dental implants to replace a missing tooth.
  • You need to support a dental bridge.
